Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers

Here are some of the most common questions we get about our work and how you can get involved.

Why do you only take commercially bred animals?

Sri Lanka is home to many rescues focused on helping mainly street and local breed animals. The care and rescue of a local breed is significantly different to the rescue process of a commercially bred animal. Fewer breeds need rescue but those cases require a lot more time, money and effort due to inbreeding and overexploitation. ToF specialises in rehabilitating and rehoming breeds and are adept at this type of rescue. We do this because we believe that we should divide the work to help more animals, rather than replicate the same work. Commercial breeding issues along with problems related to pet shops, bad breeding, puppy mills and legislation around this topic was a gap in the Sri Lankan animal welfare and protection network which Tails of Freedom was specially designed to fill.

Right now, adoptions are down because so many people are leaving the country, and many are not taking their pets with them. If we worked on rehoming these pets that would take up all our time and would mean a whole lot of pets coming into rescue, but not going out into loving homes. We are trying our best to avoid overcrowding and balance our funding to ensure we have space for the animals that need us most.

If you have a pet who needs to be rehomed, we recommend that you

  • Create a poster with a picture of the pet, any relevant details such as vaccine status, if sterilised or not and general temperament.
  • Use your contact number as you know your animal best and would therefore be the best person to gauge if and how they would settle into a new space.
  • We would be happy to share the posts to increase visibility.
  • Please note that if your pet is sterilised before adoption that would ensure their safety.

Yes, we do spay/neuter all our rescue animals before they are available for adoption. However, we prioritise the health and well-being of the animals and in rare cases, if an animal is deemed too young, old or sick for surgery, we will not spay/ neuter them. They will however be placed in the homes or sanctuaries where they will never be exploited or used for breeding.

Event and ad-hoc Volunteers: We often need volunteers to help organise, run fundraising events and help us with other activities. Your time and energy are valuable in ensuring the success of these events. We have a database of volunteers who we call on when needed – if you would like to be a part of this, please visit the Get Involved section of this website.

Join the Team: If you have a little extra time to spare more consistently and would like to be part of our team please email us at info@tailsoffreedom.org with a small description of why you would like to join us along with a copy of your CV.
